As the author, it is your responsibility to acquire and pay for permission to reproduce in your book any copyrighted material that was written or created by someone else. Typical examples include quotations from poetry, song lyrics, and prose, as well as photographs, art, or other images that were not created by you.

Although the inclusion of some material in your manuscript may qualify as “fair use,” copyright law is quite restrictive and you will be required to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Quotations from poetry: permission must be acquired, regardless of length
  • Quotations from song lyrics: permission must be acquired, regardless of length
  • Quotations from prose: in most instances you may quote up to 150 words from any individual source
  • Images: permission must be acquired for all images (including artwork, illustrations, photographs, etc.)

If you are unable or do not wish to acquire the necessary copyright permissions yourself, we can do this for you.

*The $100 fee covers our time to contact the copyright holder on your behalf with details about your book, to request permission to reprint their material, negotiate permission fee(s) as necessary, and receive written permission from the copyright holder. This fee is non-refundable regardless of whether the copyright holder grants permission to use their material or not.
