What is an ISBN?

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies each specific edition of a book or book-like product.

Typically, you will find the ISBN on the back cover of a book, where it is printed as part of the bar code. Book retailers depend on the ISBN and related bar code to identify individual books when ordering and selling inventory.

The ISBN is also a critical part of the CIP information, typically found at the front of the book (see below).

What is CIP?

Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) is a voluntary cooperative program between publishers and libraries that is coordinated by Library and Archives Canada. It enables the cataloguing of books before they are published, and the prompt distribution of this cataloguing information to booksellers and libraries. It is similar to the Library of Congress Cataloguing-in-Publication Data.

CIP information typically appears at the front of a book on the copyright page. (It looks like the information contained on an old-style library index card.)
